Shopify Checkout Extensibility

Checkout Extensibility is a massive evolving change in how tracking code works on all Shopify tiers. It isn't just about making new containers for tracking code. Shopify is changing what that code has access to on your site and that has led to just about every tag vendor scrambling to bring their documentation, apps and code snippets up to speed.

For Shopify sites that have a mix of code in checkout.liquid, marketing/tracking apps, and quite often still theme code, it can be quite a lot to untangle and test.

The Dates

August 13th -- HISTORY! "Deadline to upgrade your Information, Shipping, and Payment pages"

Not yet the end of the world, but this is what happens if you haven't yet cleared out your checkout.liquid

  • checkout.liquid is frozen

Not the worst thing, but here is the meat that Shopify is using to push change even more.

  • Can't change your payment gateways
  • Risk and fraud recomendations go away
  • Payouts take longer.

This is all under the guise that you are now a greater risk than the day before!

August 28, 2025 -- Thank you and Order status pages. Last chance for Apps using script tags! This could mean apps you still have installed. Last chance to clear out addtional scripts tags, often include where Google Tag Manager code is placed.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why isn't this free?

A: We are probably like many of you, we don't trust it too much when people scream FREE loudly. It is certainly true that we hope to aquire more long term customers with this audit service and we think the most respectful way to do that is to limit our service to start with into something that is still useable to the customer. Our customers can be free to deal with the audit results on their own or engage us further to do the work.

On that note, what we will do is schedule a FREE call to make sure you need our help. If you have doubts, we would certainly still like to talk and make sure you are in good shape.

Q: Why us?  Why not have our developers do this?

A: Shopify has published a very helpful and detailed guide on upgrading, but every developer who does this will quite likely be doing it for the first time. We have been through it. OSB recently got approval for a Shopify app for a major Customer Data Platform. We had to learn everything about Checkout Extensibility and what is happening in the next year.

OSB has specialized in MarTech Data and data collection for 20 years.

Q: Is it really that urgent?

A: Only you can really decide that. But we are here to help when you do.

Q: Shouldn't the apps I use already be upgraded?

A: Our experience so far is that you don't want to take that on faith. Most should, some may not.

Q: What if we have other issues?

A: OSB Partnered with Swiftkick because they are a full-service Shopify development agency. Anything OSB can't do, Swiftkick can.
